Additional Thoughts

Anyone who knew Paul Loggan understood what an unbelievable family man he was. To know him, was to also know his incredibly family, which is captured in the article below, printed in the Indy Star (reprinted with permission).

We are beyond blessed to have had Paul and the entire Loggan family as a part of our program family.

One thing you learn in this business of covering high school sports is that athletic directors work crazy hours.

Paul Loggan certainly did. There was rarely a time in my 12 years covering high school sports for the Star that I made a trip to North Central and did not see Loggan in the gym, on the football field or driving the gator somewhere on the North Central campus.

Loggan, who died at 57 on Sunday afternoon after a battle with coronavirus, was like a lot of athletic directors that way. He probably more to do than most at a school with an enrollment of nearly 4,000 students and a strong athletic tradition in several sports.

But work ethic alone is not what made Loggan special. It always made an impression on me that Paul almost always had his family by his side, whether it was wife Kathy, sons Michael and Will, or daughter Sami. Sometimes all of them. No matter how many hours he put in to his job, it was clear that they were part of the journey as well.

“They were always together,” said Warren Central athletic director Marques Clayton, a close competitor of North Central in the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference. “Kathy too. It was clear that Paul was preparing his kids for the next step, whatever that might be. His kids, from a young age, knew how to talk to adults and have a conversation. He brought them along for the ride.”

Michael, the Loggans’ oldest son, kept the public notified through social media of Paul’s condition from the time he was admitted to the intensive care unit and put on a ventilator at St. Vincent on April 1. The outpouring of support from former and current athletes and colleagues at North Central and throughout Central Indiana was immediate and widespread. Loggan’s story was shared on national news television programs.

Michael Loggan posted an update on Sunday morning with picture of a “Paul Strong” sign outside of North Central. “Happy Easter to all!” Loggan wrote. “Blessed to be a part of such an amazing community. Praying for that Easter Miracle! #Paulstrong”

HISTORY (ICTP)

The Washington Township Schools’ Community Tennis Program was founded over 60 years ago by Barbara S. Wynne with the vision that tennis can enhance one’s athletic ability, as well as one’s personal life.

In 1964 the program grew from her backyard court to eight courts at North Central High School. As participation and programming of this grassroots program continued to expand, so did the facility. Over the course of 60 years, private fundraising and community support created the flagship tennis facility in the Midwest.

Recently completing a two-year, four-million-dollar construction project in 2023, the Barbara S. Wynne Tennis Center received the USTA’s Outstanding Facility Award in 2024. The facility currently houses 26 full-size, post-tension concrete courts, 2 Youth Progression courts, and a state-of-the-art tennis house.

Serving as the hub for tennis in Indiana and the USTA Midwest Section, annually we host the IHSAA Boy’s and Girl’s State Tournaments and house the Indiana High School Coaches Hall of Fame.  We are home to various Midwest Championships including, but not limited to, the CITA District Closed, the Midwest Closed Championships, and the Junior Team Tennis Championships.  We actively participate with CITA to host league play and spring junior clinics.

In 2014 the Indianapolis Community Tennis Program became the management arm of the Washington Township Schools’ Community Tennis Program. Although the name may have changed, the program has not, as we continue to partner with MSD of Washington Township in bringing tennis opportunities to the extended community.

Such opportunities include tennis programming for ages 3 years old through adults, at all levels of play, and utilizing the USTA’s Youth Progression Pathways, serving over 1,000 players during the summer months.

In 2025 we joined forces with the Indianapolis Racquet Club to provide premiere coaching for our elite players in the High Performance Program.

Although our program has expanded over the years, we have maintained our tradition of excellence and have stayed true to our roots, understanding our students are learning more than just a game. The skills and core values they gain through the sport will be carried throughout their lives, both on and off the court. Reinforcing this aspect is our Kids Helping Kids philanthropy program, which has raised $700,000 for Riley Children’s Hospital since 1983.

Memorial and Thanksgiving Gardens

Thanks to Volunteers Stan and Janet Thompson and Jenny Reifeis, the landscaping surrounding the Tennis Center at North Central is being improved. All trees will remain. Beautiful plantings may be designated in memory or thanksgiving for friends and family you wish to honor with a special perennial plant.  A donation of $50 to Indianapolis Junior Tennis Development Fund will secure both the plant and recognition of honoree on either a Thanksgiving or Memorial framed Tribute listing in the Tennis House Banner Hall.

2020 Gardens Update:

Twenty-six Shasta Daisy perennial plants will be planted along with south wall of the Tennis House in May (if pandemic rules allow) in loving memory of special friends.  Additional Daisy memorial plants will be planted near the flagpole.  All donated Thanksgiving Plants will be planted in the west median island as you enter the Tennis House Parking lot.

The Stan Thompson Family has taken on the beautification of the landscape around the Tennis House. They have done an excellent job removing old/dead plants and adding new bushes and plants. Their families applied mulch and topsoil last summer. Donors and honorees will be posted in the Tennis House or you may remain anonymous. Notifications and donations honoring friends received by April 30, 2020 will be planted this May.

Click HERE to donate or kindly send donations ($50/ plant) and include name of honoree and to whom we should notify and their address of your generous donation. Kindly make your check payable to Indianapolis Jr. Tennis Development Fund (501(3) our not-for-profit organization) and mail to:

Orange Bowl Champion

HUGE congratulations to our very own Nishesh Basavareddy, B14s Orange Bowl Champion!

Basavareddy defeated Rashed Naif 6-4, 6-2 in the finals, clinching the title without dropping a single set the entire tournament!

It’s been quite a comeback from injury for Nishesh to close out the year. On top of winning the Orange Bowl, in the last 6 months he won the B16 Midwest Closed, was B14 USTA National Clay Court Champion and Doubles Finalist, was undefeated 14’s world Junior Championships, and won a J5 ITF. Absolutely incredible.

We can hardly wait to see what 2020 has in store!
