My 57th Summer at North Central Teaching Tennis
To some extent it was my most memorable summer at North Central. How do you STAY SAFE? HAVE FUN? STAY OUT OF THE TENNIS HOUSE? RESPECT RULES AND REGULATIONS REQUIRED BY A PANDEMIC? Answer: Have a loving dedicated staff that plans, posts, and produces results!
Yes, we all wore masks (except when hitting balls) and our hundreds of players did the same. The posts were all reminders of social distancing as all gates were dedicated “IN” or “OUT” and there was a designated way to get to the Tot courts, rest rooms, and monitors were nearby to assure that clean hands and sanitizing stations were used on a regular basis. Five forehead thermometer assure us that no staff or players had a fever. We tried hard and no one got sick during our short month (July 2020) we were on court.
The night before our Tennis Program began, we had a Billie Jean King Zoom to both raise awareness of Opportunities to PLAY Tennis this Summer and to raise money for more Opportunities to participate and enrich the lives of our Tennis Families. Billie Jean King’s wonderful hour-long Zoom also gave us an Educational Opportunity and we launched our first Essay Contest. The Theme was “What Billie Jean King’s Zoom did for YOU to influence your own personal development and increase your commitment to improve your tennis game”. The prize: A Summer Scholarship to High Performance.
Melissa Fitch and Dan Brunette were definitely the brains behind our “Safety Net.” JT Wynne made Podcasts and videos to help families understand our “ins” and “outs” and the behavior that would help us have a great and SAFE summer. Smith Tennis reinforced social distancing among our elite players and planned classes to include both drilling and competitions each and every day. All players had masks on during off-court times and ALL respected the rights of everyone to stay safe from Covid 19 by following the rules.
ONLY all day campers had access to the Community Room in the Tennis House for ping pong and other games. The Jordan YMCA partnered with us to allow our Tennis Campers to swim three-times each week. Camp was very successful and we thank all dedicated staff.
Our Kids Helping Kids project will continue until October 15th. We were able to have several Red Ball and Orange Ball Round Robins and Riley Children’s Foundation Trophies were awarded to winners. A BIG THANK YOU to the Central Indiana Tennis Association for providing the trophies.
Due to the Pandemic, our Tournament Schedule was severely altered but we did have three tournaments that Steve Wakefield and Dan Brunette organized and were assisted by many former Tournament Players and Staff.
One outstanding accomplishment was the grounds of the Tennis House are now full of blooming gardens and a beautiful new Evergreen Tree. Thanks goes to the Stan and Janet Thompson Family for planting over 40 beautiful plants and mulching the entire landscaped area. What a wonderful Family Project they have adopted. We deeply appreciate their continued care for the gardens by keeping them watered and free from weeds and our famous choke vine.
We appreciate the School District’s partnership and hope that Generations of Families will remember wonderful days of activities at the Tennis Center.
Lastly, we our most hopeful the Pandemic ENDS soon and that 2021 is a two month Summer Program with fewer worries and NO MASKS. Thank you everyone for your continued loyal support!
Our Treasured Friend Paul Loggan
I am glad I started my day with several streamed Easter Church services. They provided me with Christian Joy and I needed all of that and more to accept the LOSS of Paul Loggan, who was truly one of the most outstanding friends I have ever, ever treasured knowing. Knowing Paul was for many, knowing his wonderful family. To his wife Kathy, sons Michael and Will, precious daughter….Sami….I send you Agape Love and deepest Sympathy.
HISTORY (ICTP)
The Washington Township Schools’ Community Tennis Program was founded over 60 years ago by Barbara S. Wynne with the vision that tennis can enhance one’s athletic ability, as well as one’s personal life.
In 1964 the program grew from her backyard court to eight courts at North Central High School. As participation and programming of this grassroots program continued to expand, so did the facility. Over the course of 60 years, private fundraising and community support created the flagship tennis facility in the Midwest.
Recently completing a two-year, four-million-dollar construction project in 2023, the Barbara S. Wynne Tennis Center received the USTA’s Outstanding Facility Award in 2024. The facility currently houses 26 full-size, post-tension concrete courts, 2 Youth Progression courts, and a state-of-the-art tennis house.
Serving as the hub for tennis in Indiana and the USTA Midwest Section, annually we host the IHSAA Boy’s and Girl’s State Tournaments and house the Indiana High School Coaches Hall of Fame. We are home to various Midwest Championships including, but not limited to, the CITA District Closed, the Midwest Closed Championships, and the Junior Team Tennis Championships. We actively participate with CITA to host league play and spring junior clinics.
In 2014 the Indianapolis Community Tennis Program became the management arm of the Washington Township Schools’ Community Tennis Program. Although the name may have changed, the program has not, as we continue to partner with MSD of Washington Township in bringing tennis opportunities to the extended community.
Such opportunities include tennis programming for ages 3 years old through adults, at all levels of play, and utilizing the USTA’s Youth Progression Pathways, serving over 1,000 players during the summer months.
In 2025 we joined forces with the Indianapolis Racquet Club to provide premiere coaching for our elite players in the High Performance Program.
Although our program has expanded over the years, we have maintained our tradition of excellence and have stayed true to our roots, understanding our students are learning more than just a game. The skills and core values they gain through the sport will be carried throughout their lives, both on and off the court. Reinforcing this aspect is our Kids Helping Kids philanthropy program, which has raised $700,000 for Riley Children’s Hospital since 1983.
BB’s Social Distancing Challenge
Program Players BB’s Challenge: Walk to the end of your driveway three times with your tennis racquet and keeping the ball bouncing three inches up as you walk. It will strengthen your wrist and help your focus and hopefully be a challenge you can win! Rainy days: Do the above inside for three straight minutes. Summer Tennis is only two months away. We will all be together again and our country will be a safe place and healthy place for certain.
BB Loves Teaching
We are gearing up for #GivingTuesday by sharing the reasons our players and coaches love the program. Who better to kick it off than the one and only Barbara Wynne?!
Our beloved BB, who founded our program in 1964, continues to teach and share her love of the game daily. She has influenced generations of young players.
Her reason for loving teaching is, “…I get to give away something I love to a student athlete or a beginner learning to play tennis the skills needed for a lifetime of fun playing my favorite sport!”
True to her character, BB was our first donor, #GivingTennis to yet another generation of players this upcoming summer.

Happy Birthday BB!

Arthur Ashe Essay Contest
This was my 20th year as serving as the NJTL Committee Chairman of the Arthur Ashe Essay Contest. Each year, I am amazed by the ten winners, their dreams and achievements. In 2018 Indianapolis had a 14 and under boy’s winner from Perry Meridian High School, Isaac Liam, whose parents were born in Burma. Isaac played in the Jack Bradshaw NJTL Student-Athlete Program at Marian University and played #3 singles or #1 doubles for Perry Meridian this Fall. I am very proud to have founded the NJTL of Indianapolis and extremely proud of Isaac Liam’s accomplishments. Please enjoy the following video of this year’s NJTL Essay Winners Trip to New York City and Arthur Ashe Kids Day.
